Special Wash and Textile Classification

The Right Process for the Right Linen

Not every item should be processed the same way. Blue Star Linen uses sorting and classification procedures to identify linen requiring different handling or additional treatment.

  • Special Wash

Items requiring additional treatment are separated from standard processing and routed through the appropriate Special Wash procedure.

  • Stained Items

Items with remaining stains can be classified and documented for additional attention.

  • Discard

Linen that no longer meets the appropriate condition or quality standard can be identified and documented for discard.

  • Retain

Items requiring retention rather than standard return can be identified and separated.

  • New Items

New linen entering the operation can be identified and documented as part of the customer’s inventory workflow.

Sorting, Bag Colors and Special Wash

Proper sorting and classification protect the customer’s linen investment and help maintain high quality standards.

  • Clean Linen

Clean linen has successfully completed the washing, drying, finishing, inspection, and packing process and is ready for use.

  • Orange Bags: Stain / Special Wash

Orange bags are used for linen that still requires additional treatment after the regular wash process. Customers should accumulate these items until the minimum processing quantity is reached, label the load as Special Wash, and submit the request through LinenTech with a photo when possible.

  • Yellow Bags: Minor or Light Stains

Yellow bags are used for items with minor or light stains that may be reused at the customer’s discretion after inspection. If the property determines that the item does not meet its quality standard, it should be placed with the orange Special Wash load.

  • Purple Bags: Discard

Purple bags are used for linen that does not meet quality standards due to permanent stains, damage, advanced wear, or other conditions that make the item unsuitable for guest use.

    • Damaged linen: torn, ripped, holed, or frayed.
    • Permanent stains that cannot be removed.
    • Worn-out linen: thin, rough, weakened, or no longer presentable.
    • Discolored linen: severe fading, yellowing, or uneven color.
    • Contaminated linen: unsafe due to biological or chemical exposure.
    • Obsolete linen: no longer aligned with current standards, branding, or inventory requirements.

Special Wash Program

Special Wash is intended for linen that requires deeper treatment due to stains, delicacy, special materials, or condition. The customer should submit a Special Wash request through LinenTech, include a photo of the bin when possible, and label the load clearly.

Shipping Manifest and Inventory Reporting

Blue Star Linen provides electronic shipping manifests that improve tracking and accountability for each delivery. Manifests may include bin numbers, item classifications, clean quantities, stain, discard, retain, new items, wear and tear, and corresponding net weight.

Inventory reporting supports transparency, strengthens trust, and helps customers understand linen movement throughout the laundry cycle.
